Discovery and scientific history of the Mariposa Catalina lily

Calochortus catalinae was first described by Sereno Watson (1826-1892), who was a rather prominent botanist in his day and published numerous papers on California plants. He published this species in 1879 in the Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts (vol 14, p.268), based on a specimen from Santa Catalina island off Los Angeles.
